The Huawei LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0 is the modular storage system we specify when a villa or house owner wants to bank surplus daytime generation for the evening, or wants the lights and pumps to stay on when the grid drops. Its defining feature is that you can start at 5 kWh and add 5 kWh modules later, rather than committing to full capacity on day one. Before deciding whether storage is right for your property, read about a hybrid with battery backup, run the numbers in our calculator, and see the rest of the equipment we build systems around.

What is the LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0, and can capacity really be added later?

The LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0 belongs to Huawei's Smart String ESS family and comes in two parts: a single LUNA2000-5KW-C0 power module that manages charge and discharge, and one to three LUNA2000-5-E0 battery modules of 5 kWh each stacked beneath it — giving 5, 10 or 15 kWh of usable capacity, with the datasheet stating system scalability from 5 up to 30 kWh. So yes, capacity really can be added later: it is a stacking operation on the existing unit, not a replacement. The figure most people overlook is not capacity but power. The 5 kWh configuration delivers 2.5 kW continuously with a 3.5 kW peak for 10 seconds; the 10 and 15 kWh configurations deliver 5 kW continuously with a 7 kW peak for 10 seconds. That is what determines what you can actually run simultaneously during an outage — kilowatt-hours only determine how long. The cells are LiFePO4 with 100% depth of discharge stated under 0.2C charge and discharge at 25°C at beginning of life; the datasheet also notes that after more than 24 hours without sunlight the system stops discharging at a minimum 15% state of charge to protect the pack. System voltage depends on the inverter: 450 V nominal with a 350–560 V operating range on single-phase systems, and 600 V nominal with a 600–980 V range on three-phase. One point to settle before ordering: this battery pairs with Huawei's residential and small-commercial inverter families — L1, LC0, M1, MB0, MAP0 and certain SUN5000 models — and is not listed alongside the C&I SUN2000-100KTL-M2 or 115KTL-M2. Highlights from the datasheet

  • Genuine 5 kWh increments: one power module plus one to three 5 kWh battery modules, so you can start within budget and add capacity once several months of real consumption data show what the household actually needs.
  • Power, not capacity, decides what stays on: 2.5 kW continuous on the 5 kWh unit versus 5 kW on the 10 and 15 kWh units, with 3.5 kW and 7 kW ten-second peaks. Compare those against your backup loads before choosing a size.
  • LiFePO4 cells with 100% stated DoD: quoted under 0.2C at 25°C at beginning of life, with protective logic that halts discharge at a 15% minimum state of charge after more than 24 hours without sun.
  • IP66 and fanless: natural convection cooling and under 29 dB means it can sit near a terrace or bedroom wall without becoming a noise complaint.
  • Floor-standing as standard, wall mount optional: total weight with the floor stand kit is 63.8 kg at 5 kWh, 113.8 kg at 10 kWh and 163.8 kg at 15 kWh, so the supporting floor or wall needs to be considered at design stage.
  • Plan the space in advance: 670 x 150 x 600 mm at 5 kWh, 670 x 150 x 960 mm at 10 kWh and 670 x 150 x 1,320 mm at 15 kWh. At only 150 mm deep it sits tight against a side wall without eating the walkway.
  • Always confirm the inverter first: the compatible list covers the L1, LC0, M1, MB0, MAP0 and certain SUN5000 families. If your existing inverter is not on that list, the retrofit plan has to change.

Why this model suits Phuket

  • Storm-season outages: heavy monsoon rain brings dips and cuts in many Phuket neighbourhoods. The 5 kW continuous output of the 10 and 15 kWh configurations keeps refrigeration, water pumps, lighting and internet running.
  • Villa load is heaviest after dark: bedroom air-conditioning and pool pumps run well into the evening, which is precisely the consumption that stored daytime generation offsets.
  • Hot and humid year-round: the unit is rated IP66, -20°C to +55°C and 5%–95% relative humidity, which comfortably spans Phuket conditions.
  • Quiet enough for guest accommodation: natural convection cooling and under 29 dB is a real advantage in a rental villa where equipment noise turns into a review.

Who it suits

  • Households with high evening consumption: if most of the bill is generated after sunset, a grid-tied array alone only goes so far, and storing daytime surplus addresses the problem directly.
  • Pool villas and holiday homes: owners who want both a lower bill and reliable backup for pool pumps, refrigeration and security systems.
  • Short-stay rental villas: where a single outage becomes a bad review, and automatic, silent backup is worth more than a generator.
  • Owners who prefer to start small: begin at 5 kWh, observe one or two seasons of real usage, then add modules based on data rather than guesswork.
  • Not suitable for: hotels or factories running C&I inverters such as the SUN2000-100KTL-M2 or 115KTL-M2, since this battery is not on their compatible-inverter list.

Summary

The Huawei LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0 is a modular LiFePO4 battery built to start at 5 kWh and grow a module at a time to 15 kWh per stack, with the datasheet citing system scalability to 30 kWh. Size it on power as well as capacity: 2.5 kW or 5 kW continuous output is what decides which appliances run together during an outage. Two things to settle before ordering are inverter compatibility and the warranty terms actually applicable in Thailand, since regional documents differ. Frequently asked questions

What are the specifications of the Huawei LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0?

It is a modular storage system built from one LUNA2000-5KW-C0 power module and one to three LUNA2000-5-E0 battery modules of 5 kWh each, giving 5, 10 or 15 kWh of usable capacity, with the datasheet stating system scalability from 5 to 30 kWh. Continuous output is 2.5 kW on the 5 kWh unit and 5 kW on the 10 and 15 kWh units, with 3.5 kW and 7 kW peaks lasting 10 seconds. Cells are LiFePO4 with 100% stated depth of discharge. System voltage is 450 V nominal, 350–560 V operating, on single-phase inverters, and 600 V nominal, 600–980 V operating, on three-phase. The unit is IP66, naturally cooled and rated under 29 dB.

Should I choose 5, 10 or 15 kWh?

Look at two numbers together. First, how much energy the house consumes after sunset — that sets the kilowatt-hours. Second, the largest combination of loads you want running at once — that sets the power requirement. The 5 kWh unit delivers only 2.5 kW continuously with a 3.5 kW ten-second peak, whereas the 10 and 15 kWh units deliver 5 kW continuously with a 7 kW ten-second peak. If you want air-conditioning and a pool pump running together during an outage, 5 kWh may hold enough energy but not supply enough power. The advantage of this system is that you can start at 5 kWh and add modules later, so the decision does not have to be perfect on day one.

What warranty applies to the LUNA2000 battery?

The datasheet does not state a warranty period. The APAC Warranty and Service Conditions document dated 2021 lists the LUNA2000-(5-30)-S0 at five years, or 13.17 MWh of cumulative throughput at 60% remaining capacity at end of life per 5 kWh pack, whichever comes first, and states the warranty cannot be extended. However, documents in some regions, Europe among them, quote ten years. We therefore recommend obtaining the warranty document that actually applies in Thailand from your distributor before committing, rather than relying on figures published for other markets, since terms vary by country and contract.

Which inverters is the LUNA2000-5/10/15-S0 compatible with?

The datasheet lists the SUN2000-2/3/3.68/4/4.6/5/6KTL-L1, SUN2000-8/10K-LC0, SUN2000-3/4/5/6/8/10KTL-M1, SUN2000-12/15/17/20/25K-MB0, SUN2000-5/6/8/10/12K-MAP0, SUN5000-8/12K-MAP0 and SUN5000-17/25K-MB0 families. Those are residential and small commercial inverters; the C&I models such as the SUN2000-100KTL-M2 and 115KTL-M2 are not on the list. If you already have a Huawei inverter and want to retrofit storage, the first step is to read the exact model code from the unit's label and check it against that list. Firmware compatibility should also be confirmed with Huawei or an authorised distributor before ordering.

What space and mounting does the LUNA2000 need?

The stack is 670 mm wide and only 150 mm deep, with height growing by module: 600 mm at 5 kWh, 960 mm at 10 kWh and 1,320 mm at 15 kWh. Total weight including the floor stand toolkit is 63.8 kg, 113.8 kg and 163.8 kg respectively. Floor standing is the standard installation and wall mounting is an optional accessory, so the chosen floor or wall must genuinely carry that load. Because cooling is by natural convection, pick a position with airflow that is not in direct sun all day, even though the unit is IP66 rated. Leave clearance above the stack for future modules at first installation.
