Can a house run on solar alone in Thailand?

It's one of the questions we're asked most by villa owners: "Could I just cut the wire to PEA?" The short answer is yes, you could. The useful answer is the math — what full independence actually costs in THB, why we usually steer grid-connected homes to a hybrid system instead, and the cases where true off-grid is genuinely the right call.

Quick answer

Technically yes — but where the grid exists, it's usually not worth it. Full independence means oversizing the array for rainy weeks and buying a battery bank big enough for nights plus bad-weather days: for a typical villa that's on the order of 80–120 kWh of storage, or 320,000–600,000 THB in batteries alone at 4,000–5,000 THB per kWh. The smarter middle path for grid-connected homes is a hybrid system — solar plus a 10–20 kWh battery, with the grid as backstop — which delivers daytime savings, evening storage and outage backup at a fraction of the cost. True off-grid earns its keep where there is no PEA connection to begin with.

The three system types

On-grid, hybrid, off-grid — what each one actually is

All three use the same panels on the same Phuket sun (4.5–5 peak-sun hours a day). What differs is what happens when the sun isn't shining.

On-grid (no battery) Panels power the house in daylight; the grid covers everything else. Cheapest per kW and the fastest payback — a 10 kW system runs 350,000–500,000 THB before VAT. If the grid fails, the system shuts off for safety.
Hybrid (grid + battery) Adds a battery and a hybrid inverter. Midday surplus is stored for the evening, and essential circuits keep running instantly through grid outages. The battery adds roughly 4,000–5,000 THB per kWh of capacity. This is what we recommend and install most.
Off-grid (no PEA at all) No grid connection — the array and battery must cover everything, including monsoon weeks, usually with a backup generator behind them. The right tool where the grid doesn't reach; an expensive statement where it does.
The sizing math

Full independence vs hybrid, for the same villa

Take a villa using about 2,100 units a month — roughly a 9,000 THB bill at the ~4.3 THB per marginal unit high-usage homes pay. Here's how the two paths compare. Illustrative figures; the survey sizes it properly.

That last row is the heart of it. Once a hybrid system covers your daytime load and evenings from the battery, the grid is only filling the gaps — and every gap-filling unit costs you ~4.3 THB. Spending an extra several hundred thousand baht on storage to avoid those residual units buys electricity at many times the grid price. If the goal is a lower bill, the money works far harder as panels; our worth-it math and the savings calculator both show why.

The middle path

Hybrid: most of the independence, a fraction of the cost

A hybrid system is what we recommend — and install — for most Phuket villas that ask about going off-grid. A Deye hybrid inverter manages three sources at once: panels power the house directly through the day, surplus charges a lithium battery for the evening, and the grid quietly covers whatever remains. When the grid drops — brief outages and brownouts do happen here — the battery takes over instantly, keeping lights, Wi-Fi, fridges and selected aircon circuits running. One more advantage of staying connected: a grid-tied home keeps its options. Surplus can be sold to PEA under the 2026 buy-back round at 2.20 THB per unit — a bonus, not the goal, since self-consumed units are worth ~4.3 THB — and individuals installing grid-connected systems up to 10 kWp in 2026–2028 can claim the personal income tax deduction of up to 200,000 THB under Royal Decree No. 805. A fully off-grid system qualifies for neither.

The exception

When true off-grid genuinely makes sense

Off-grid isn't a mistake — it's a tool for a specific job. These are the situations where we'd design one without hesitation.

No grid access at all Remote land, hillside plots beyond the last pole, island properties. If PEA doesn't reach you, off-grid solar isn't a lifestyle choice — it's the power supply.
Grid extension costs more than batteries Bringing poles and cable to a distant site can cost more than the entire battery bank. When the connection quote beats the storage quote, the math flips in off-grid's favour.
Small, honest loads A weekend cabin or farm building with lights, a fridge and a fan is a very different problem from a six-aircon villa. Modest loads keep the battery bank — and the budget — small.

In every off-grid design we still specify a small backup generator for the darkest monsoon stretches — panels produce year round in Phuket, but consecutive storm days are real, and a generator that runs a few hours a year is far cheaper than the battery capacity to ride them out. Given our background in generators and standby power, that's a combination we're comfortable designing properly.

Can a house in Thailand run on solar alone?

Enough to carry the house through every night plus a buffer for consecutive rainy days, when panels may produce a fraction of their average. For a villa using around 2,100 units a month, evening and night use plus a roughly two-day rainy buffer points to something like 80–120 kWh of storage — 320,000–600,000 THB at 4,000–5,000 THB per kWh, before the oversized array and a backup generator for monsoon weeks. A hybrid home gets by with 10–20 kWh because the grid covers the rare shortfall.

What is a hybrid solar system?

A hybrid system combines rooftop solar, a battery, and a grid connection managed by a hybrid inverter such as the Deye units we install. Daytime solar powers the house directly, surplus charges the battery for the evening, and the grid covers whatever is left. During a grid outage, the battery takes over instantly for essential circuits. You get most of the independence of off-grid at a fraction of the cost.

Do I still get a PEA electricity bill with a hybrid system?

Yes, but a much smaller one. The meter stays connected and you pay for whatever you still import — deep night hours, long rainy spells, or heavy loads beyond the system's capacity. Well-sized hybrid systems in Phuket cover most daytime consumption plus the evening from the battery, and typical solar paybacks here run 3–5 years.

When does true off-grid solar make sense in Thailand?

When the grid isn't realistically available: remote land, island properties, or sites where extending a PEA connection would cost more than the battery bank. In those cases off-grid solar with battery storage — usually paired with a small backup generator for the monsoon — is the right tool, and it's a system type we design and install. If a PEA meter already serves the property, hybrid is almost always the better answer.
