The Sungrow SH10RT-20 is a 10,000 W three-phase hybrid inverter that does two jobs from one box: cutting your daytime electricity bill and keeping the villa running when the grid drops. Unlike many hybrids that derate in backup mode, it delivers its full 10,000 W off-grid. This page translates the SH10RT-20 datasheet into what it means for a house with several air conditioners and a pool pump. Pearl Solar Energy's engineers specify this unit when designing hybrid systems with battery backup, and we handle the PEA permits for you. Compare it with other models on our equipment page.
What is the Sungrow SH10RT-20, and how does it differ from a standard grid-tied inverter?
A hybrid inverter combines three functions in one enclosure: converting DC from the panels, charging and discharging a battery, and supplying a backup circuit when the grid fails. A standard grid-tied inverter must shut down instantly during an outage for safety reasons, which is why a normal rooftop system leaves you in the dark despite having panels on the roof. The SH10RT-20 connects as three-phase 3/N/PE at 220/380 V or 230/400 V with a 270-480 V window, and draws a maximum output current of 15.2 A — the figure your electrician uses to size the breaker and main cable. On the DC side there are two MPPTs, one taking a single string and the other taking two, three strings in total, with a maximum PV current of 40.5 A split as 13.5 A and 27 A. That asymmetry matters: you cannot simply divide the array in half between the two inputs. The battery side accepts high-voltage lithium-ion from 150 V to 600 V, charges and discharges at 30 A, and handles up to 10,600 W in either direction — slightly more than the AC rating, so the battery is not the bottleneck on a bright afternoon. The standout figure is backup: a full 10,000 W / 10,000 VA off-grid with a 12,000 W / 12,000 VA peak for 5 minutes, which is what carries motor startup surges. Note that the 3,400 VA single-phase peak is conditional on a paired battery of at least 12.8 kWh; a smaller battery bank will not meet that condition, so it has to be planned at design stage. Highlights from the datasheet
- Full 10,000 W / 10,000 VA backup output: Many hybrids on the market derate heavily when the grid goes down. This one does not, which means you are not choosing which bedroom keeps its air conditioning during an outage.
- 12,000 W / 12,000 VA peak for 5 minutes: This is the number that matters in a pool villa. Air conditioner compressors and pool pumps draw far more at startup than while running, and continuous ratings alone will mislead you.
- Under 20 ms changeover: Fast enough that most household electronics never reboot — fridges, routers, home automation and IP cameras simply carry on through the transition.
- 15,000 Wp of PV on a 10,000 W output: Deliberate oversizing means the battery refills faster while the house load is still being served from the array.
- 150 V - 600 V high-voltage battery input at 10,600 W: Charge and discharge power slightly exceeds the AC rating, so a strong solar day is not throttled by the battery interface.
- 98.4% maximum and 97.9% European efficiency: The European weighted figure is the fairer cross-brand comparison because it reflects a realistic mix of operating conditions rather than one ideal point.
- IP65, fanless, around 30 dB(A), 27 kg: Natural cooling means no fan noise, so it can sit near living space, and at 460 x 540 x 170 mm two technicians can mount it comfortably.

Why this model suits Phuket
- Storm-season outages: Phuket gets heavy rain and wind in bursts. A changeover under 20 ms at the full 10,000 W means the household barely registers the interruption.
- Villas with air conditioning and pool pumps: The 12,000 W / 12,000 VA five-minute peak speaks directly to motor startup loads, which is a far more relevant number for a pool villa than the continuous rating alone.
- Hot, humid conditions: Rated IP65 with natural cooling and an operating range of -25 to 60 degrees Celsius. We still mount it shaded and out of driving rain, because shade and airflow are what extend service life in this climate.
- Most premium homes here are three-phase: Which matches this unit's 3/N/PE output at 220/380 V or 230/400 V across a 270-480 V window. See what a full installation involves under services.
Who it suits
- Pool villas and detached homes on three-phase supply: Owners who want lower bills and genuine backup from a single piece of equipment rather than two separate systems.
- Properties with unreliable supply: Homes at the end of a distribution line, where the sub-20 ms changeover stops electronics rebooting every time the grid flickers.
- Short-term rental villas: Where a single outage during a guest's stay costs you a review. Full-rated backup is easier to justify commercially than most owners expect.
- Owners phasing their investment: Start with panels and the inverter now, add the battery later — the battery interface is already built in, so nothing has to be replaced.
- Not the right fit for: Single-phase homes, or commercial loads well beyond the 10,000 W class, which should look at a larger unit. See solar cost in Phuket for sizing context.
Summary
The Sungrow SH10RT-20's real selling points are not the headline rating but three specific numbers: full 10,000 W backup output, a 12,000 W peak held for 5 minutes, and changeover in under 20 ms. Together those decide whether your villa actually keeps functioning during an outage. Before ordering, settle three things: the 5-year standard warranty and whether you want it extended toward 25 years, long-term stock and spares availability from the Thai distributor given that Sungrow has released newer three-phase hybrid series, and written confirmation of which battery models are compatible with this specific unit. If you would like us to size the battery bank for your actual consumption, contact us and we will run the numbers.
